This is the future of air travel. Composites, made of two different materials fused together to form one better material, will be used to build all airplanes in the not-so-distant-future.
The first commercial airliner made of composite material is the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, is a dual engine airplane that can carry upwards of 300 passengers. It will cost between $150-$200 million and make 8,000 mile journeys at mach 0.85.
This is just a quick post, showing a few tidbits, and while I don’t usually cite them, Wikipedia has an excellent article on the 787 with loads of illustrations and technical information. CNN also ran an article about the composite future of airliners.
