There was no E3 sketchbook on Penny Arcade this year.

There needed not be an E3 sketchbook, because the webcomic geniuses at PA summed up the entire three and a half days in one simple comic.

And then they finished the job in their single E3 blog post:

No doubt the proprietors of Ladies’ Home Journal were breathless during Nintendo’s presentation, but those outside of that august body may derive less enjoyment. This is the deep-dish, delicious irony endured by the Nintendo stalwart: to see their platform of choice ascendant, even as their bright God turns his face away. Though it contained very little sustenance for our kind, the presentation was (as is typical) a confident, refined affair. The salvo was not a failure. It was simply aimed elsewhere.

That was E3 this year. More promises of future promises promising future promises and no real substance out of the big three.

If the big three didn’t bore you to death, there was some actual content at E3 this year, including the rise of Atari, the balls descending on Electronic Arts and an awesome looking Fallout 3.

And there were some sleepers and a movie announcement. Yay.

WESTWOOD, Calif. — With five locations in California and another in Vegas, D’Amore’s Pizza is a must, especially for any East Coast tourists in the area.

The owning family is from Boston. The grandmother/matriarch even brought Boston water to California to make her pizza dough with when they first started up. You can smell their pizza a block away. This is a real beacon of light in a town full of “California Pizza Kitchens.”

Try the pizza bianco ($18.95-$24.95), white pizza with fresh spinach and onion cooked in olive oil with garlic, roasted red peppers, ricotta, romano and mozzarella cheeses. There’s also a BBQ chicken pizza ($18.95-$24.95) with hickory bbq sauce with red Bermuda onions, cilantro, and cheese.

Give these guys a try, especially if you’re homesick for something back east.

WESTWOOD, Calif. — If you have a hankerin for some Chinese food, the First Szechuan Wok has a large menu, good portions and attentive wait staff.

The appetizers were especially good. The pork dumplings (6 for $5.95) were fresh and available pan-fried or steamed. They also have chicken dumplings, but ran out on the day we visited. Also try the cold noodles with sauce ($4.95) as a tasty snack.

The General Tso chicken ($9.95) was good, but different than our party expected being from the East Coast.

I had the kung pao chicken ($8.25), which is spicy chicken stir-fried with vegetables and peanuts. It was quite good but not really that spicy.

Finally, the sweet and sour chicken ($8.25) was excellent and much fresher than we’ve seen at chain restaurants. It was the best dish we ordered and would highly recommend it.

The steamed rice comes in a communal bowl — you get one bowl even if you all order rice — but don’t worry because you can refill it for free.

We received an orange and fortune cookie for dessert. The fortune cookie was a lot more “cookie-like” than we’re used to at other restaurants. Very tasty though.

We’re talking about pretty good Chinese food that’s a little pricey but very fresh. A good choice in Westwood Village.

ARTESIA, Calif. — Blast reporter Terri Schwartz and I figure on eating a ton of Mexican food between our nine days in Long Beach/Los Angeles and four days in San Diego.

Our first stop was a chain joint called El Pollo Loco, the McDonald’s of Mexican food.

I had a green quesadilla, while Terri played it safe with grilled chicken, mashed potatoes and broccoli.

The food was filling, and the service was quick and friendly. I was a little sketched out by their “salsa bar,” which looked like it was sitting out for a while. There’s just something un-kosher about anything buffet style at a takeout fast food Mexican restaurant.

We didn’t realize that El Pollo Loco has locations in both Massachusetts (where she’s from and I live) and Connecticut (where I’m from) — we’d never heard of it before.

Off to a good start, food-wise.

I put my date of birth into the system when I reserved the car. This 25+ bullshit to rent a car is just that. How can you justify charging $800 for someone to drive a car for two weeks?
